The world of SEO is constantly changing, meaning that strategies that are effective now may not be helpful in the future. Keeping up with the latest SEO trends can help maintain your website’s rankings, get more clicks, and lead to more conversions. 

In this article, we’ll cover some current SEO trends while looking into the future to determine what aspects of SEO will change (or maybe stay the same?) over time.

The Current SEO Landscape

At the moment, the following factors have become increasingly important:

  1. The continued rise of mobile search. 
  2. The increasing importance of local search. 
  3. The growth of voice search. 
  4. The importance of site speed. 
  5. The rise of visual search. 

All these factors have made SEO more competitive and complex than ever before. SEOs now have to work harder, be better and do more to succeed at SEO in 2022. 

Now, let’s take a look at 5 SEO trends that we feel will continue to dominate and have an impact on SEO in the years to come.

1) AI and SEO

AI and SEO work together in a number of different ways. First, AI concepts like Natural Language Processing help with content creation by enabling you to find and optimise your content for the most relevant keywords for your audience. Second, AI can help with link building through its ability to enable you to find quality websites that are related to yours. Finally, AI can also help with content distribution by allowing you to send targeted messages to the right people at the right time.

An area where AI is taking SEO to a whole new level is with AI-generated content. While it’s not exactly perfect, AI-generated content is designed to be easy for search engines to read and understand. It’s important to note that AI content creation tools like Rytr aren’t meant to replace human-generated text but rather supplement it. AI-generated text can help you increase your overall website traffic and engagement by making it easier for users to find the information they’re looking for on your site.

2) Voice Search

Voice search keeps growing in popularity, and it will likely replace mobile as the primary method of search in future. They’re usually used to help users find relevant information quickly and easily, which is what many people look for when they visit a site.

Tools like these (for example, Surfer SEO) help websites improve their ranking by ensuring their content is written in such a way that Google understands what the page is about and determines its relevance for target keywords.

Over time, with the help of AI being utilised to analyse SERPs and quality content, we can expect to see content optimisation tools become more sophisticated and better at providing suggestions for your content.

4) Page Experience

Last year, Google rolled out its Page Experience update. It has been one of the most significant changes to search in recent years and has had a quantifiable impact with the introduction of Core Web Vitals. These metrics are critical to improving your website’s SEO performance by helping you understand where visitors are dropping off and what they’re not enjoying on your site.

Core Web Vitals include the following performance metrics:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): the amount of time it takes the largest content asset on the website to load.
  • First Input Delay (FID): how long it takes for your website to react to a user’s first interaction with the page.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how many unplanned layout shifts happen during the lifespan of the web page.

Future of SEO UX

With Google’s mission to “organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” we foresee page experience continuing to be a relevant ranking factor in the future.

5) Google MUM

Google MUM is a new technology that uses Artificial Intelligence to answer complex search queries with what’s known as multimodal data. MUM is multilingual and can understand information from different media formats, including text, images, video, and audio files.

Google is using MUM to expand their semantic databases and improve international search. This technology will help Google better understand the context of search queries and content and match them more accurately to search intent. It’s essentially the next step up from Google BERT.

Google MUM is a major development for SEOs, as it will help Google develop its own search systems faster without relying on quantum computers. As of now, those are still not commercially viable. We’re cheating slightly on this one as it’s something Google has already announced. It has started to roll it out and will continue to do so in the next few years.
